FAQs About Bathroom Remodel Licenses and Permits in Knoxville

Where do I verify a Tennessee contractor license?

Use verify.tn.gov. Check the classification, dollar limit and expiration date.

What if my contractor says I do not need a permit?

Call the permit office yourself. It takes five minutes and protects your sale later.

Who pulls the permit, me or the contractor?

Your contractor normally does. State law puts each contractor’s license number on the permit.

Does a tub-to-shower conversion need a permit?

Yes. It moves the drain and valve, so it needs a plumbing permit. Framing changes add a building permit.

How much does a bathroom permit cost?

Fees depend on the office and the project value. We list permit fees as their own line in your written estimate.

Can I remodel my own bathroom without a contractor?

Often, as an owner-occupant. You still need permits where the work calls for them. See the homeowner rules above.

Does a handyman need a license in Knox County?

On jobs of $3,000 and up, yes. Plumbing and electrical follow their own trade rules, so a handyman may still need more.

How long does a permit take?

The city pages list no timeline for bathroom remodels. We never promise a date. Ask the office for current review times.

Do I need a permit to replace a vanity?

The cabinet and countertop do not. New plumbing connections might. Ask your office, and we will confirm for your address.

Do I need a permit to replace a bathtub in Knoxville?

Likely yes. A new tub usually means new valves or drain work, which needs a plumbing permit. Ask your permit office before you start.
